Buchanhaven Heritage Centre
About This Museum
Tucked away in the old Peterhead fishing village of Buchanhaven, this heritage centre feels more like stepping into a local's living room than a formal museum. Itβs a community-run labour of love, dedicated to preserving the intimate stories of a life shaped by the sea. You'll find walls lined with black and white photos of stern-faced fishermen and their sturdy boats, while glass cases protect delicate lacework and well-worn tools. The air carries a faint, comforting scent of old wood and paper, making the past feel immediately present.
Collection Highlights
The centrepiece is often the detailed model of the old Buchanhaven harbour as it once was, surrounded by artefacts from the fishing trade. Personal items, like a fisherman's knitted gansey sweater or a family's cherished bible, tell quieter, more powerful stories.
Visitor Information
It's run by wonderfully knowledgeable volunteers, so opening times can be flexible; it's best to check ahead if you're making a special trip. Entry is free, but they gratefully accept donations to keep this little piece of history alive.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a converted traditional granite cottage, itβs a modest, single-story building that blends seamlessly into its residential street.
