Brunel's SS Great Britain
About This Museum
You'd never guess it, but this magnificent ship was once a near-total wreck, rusting away in the Falkland Islands for over 80 years. Now, standing proudly in her original Bristol dry dock, she feels almost alive. Stepping aboard the SS Great Britain is like traveling back to 1843; you can almost hear the creak of timbers and the shouts of sailors. The genius of Brunel is palpable everywhere, from the grand dining saloon right down to the vast, iron hull.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss getting up close with the massive, revolutionary propeller or exploring the 'Being Brunel' museum next door to see his iconic top hat and personal diaries. Down below deck, you'll find remarkably preserved passenger quarters and even a ghostly collection of luggage left behind.
Visitor Information
Wear good shoes because you'll be climbing rigging and exploring deep into the dry dock under her hull. It's an all-weather kind of day out, with so much to see inside and out.
Architecture & Building
It's not a building at all, but Isambard Kingdom Brunel's groundbreaking iron-hulled steamship, a true leviathan of its age with a soaring mast profile and an elegantly curved black hull.
