About This Museum
Tucked away on the first floor of the old Angel building, right on the Market Place, this little gem feels like stepping into Brigg's attic. It all started back in 1974 when a bunch of passionate locals decided their town's history was worth saving. You'll find everything from prehistoric dugout canoes pulled from the nearby River Ancholme to memories of the town's bustling weekly market. The whole place has a wonderfully cluttered, personal feel, as if you're discovering these stories for yourself.
Collection Highlights
The star of the show is definitely the Brigg Raft, a massive Bronze Age canoe that makes you wonder about the people who carved it. I loved seeing the old shop fronts recreated inside, like the chemist and the cobbler, complete with all their original bits and bobs. There's also a fascinating collection of photographs that really bring old market day bustle to life.
Visitor Information
It's run by volunteers, so opening hours are a bit limitedβmostly Saturdays and some weekdays in summer, so it's best to check their website before you pop in. Being upstairs, it's not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs unfortunately.
Architecture & Building
Housed in The Angel, a handsome red-brick building that dates back to the late 1700s and has seen life as an inn and coaching house; you get a real sense of history just walking through the door.
