Bolsover Castle
About This Museum
Perched on a hilltop with views that stretch for miles, Bolsover Castle feels less like a fortress and more like a lavish fantasy. I was immediately drawn into the world of the Cavendish family, who built this place not for defense but for pure, extravagant pleasure in the 17th century. Wandering through the 'Little Castle' keep is an absolute delight; every room is a surprise, from the breathtakingly painted Heaven Room on the ceiling to the surprisingly intimate Marble Closet. The atmosphere is one of faded grandeur and romance, where you can almost hear the echoes of lavish parties and whispered secrets in the walls.
Collection Highlights
The star is undoubtedly the Little Castle's interior, especially the intricate fireplaces and the vibrant wall paintings in the Pillar Parlour. Don't miss the life-sized replica of William Cavendish's warhorse in the Riding School, and be sure to walk through the ruined Terrace Range to imagine its former glory.
