Blists Hill Victorian Town
About This Museum
You won't believe this, but you can actually exchange your modern money for old-fashioned pounds and shillings at the bank here to spend in the shops. It’s a proper Victorian town, frozen in the late 19th century, where the blacksmith, chemist, and baker are all going about their day in full costume. The air smells of coal smoke and freshly baked bread, and you can hear the clang of the forge as you wander down the uneven cobbled street. It doesn't feel like a museum at all; it feels like you've genuinely stepped back in time.
Collection Highlights
The working ironworks is incredible, with massive hammers powered by a steam engine. You can also peek into the quirky Victorian dentist's office (be glad you don't need a check-up there!) and watch the printer using his clattering press.
Visitor Information
It's out in Madeley, Telford, and honestly, give yourself a whole day for this – there's so much to see and do. Chatting with the townsfolk is the best part; they stay completely in character!
Architecture & Building
It's not one building but a whole village of restored brick and timber structures from the era, including humble workers' cottages, a sturdy candle factory, and even a charming little chapel.
