About This Museum

Tucked away on Silver Street in the heart of Axminster, this little gem is a total surprise. It's set right in the Thomas Whitty House, which feels wonderfully fitting. You get to dive into the town's fascinating story, which is so much more than just carpets, though of course those famous Axminster looms take centre stage. It’s the kind of place where you can easily lose an hour, piecing together the local history from Roman times to today.

Collection Highlights

The star of the show is undoubtedly the working replica of an original Axminster carpet loom – seeing it really brings the town's textile heritage to life. You'll also find intriguing Roman artefacts dug up locally and displays on the Axminster fire that reshaped the town.

Visitor Information

It's a cozy spot, so check their opening hours online before you go as they can be seasonal. Entry is very reasonably priced, and it's a perfect wet-weather alternative if you're exploring Devon and Dorset.

Architecture & Building

Housed in a charming Georgian-era townhouse with classic brick and sash windows, it has a real lived-in, historical feel from the moment you see it.
