Apsley House

About This Museum

It’s one of London’s great ironies that the home of Napoleon’s most formidable foe contains a colossal, nearly nude statue of the French emperor himself. Stepping into Apsley House is like walking straight into the life of the first Duke of Wellington, who famously defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. The grand state rooms, dripping with gilding and crimson silk, feel as if the Duke has just stepped out for a moment. Its walls are a veritable who's who of Old Masters, with canvases by Velázquez and Rubens hanging alongside glittering gifts from grateful European monarchs.

Collection Highlights

The star of the show is Antonio Canova's stunning 11-foot marble of Napoleon as a Roman god, but don't miss the exquisite Portuguese silver service or Goya's haunting portrait of the Duke.
