Abertillery & District Museum Society Ltd
About This Museum
Tucked away on Market Street, our museum is the town's memory keeper, a place where the rich, gritty story of Abertillery and its people is lovingly preserved. We're not a grand, imposing institution but a local hub where you can almost hear the echoes of coal miners' boots and the chatter from the old ironworks. It’s all about the community here; every donated photograph or heirloom tells a personal tale. Stepping inside feels like flipping through a family album that belongs to the whole valley.
Collection Highlights
You'll find everything from beautifully carved miners' lamps and crisp union banners to fascinating relics from the old Abertillery Ironworks. One of our most poignant displays is dedicated to the Six Bells Colliery disaster, ensuring those men are never forgotten. We also have a wonderfully eclectic mix of local school memorabilia, vintage shop signs, and old photographs that really bring the past to life.
Visitor Information
Pop in and you'll likely be greeted by one of our volunteers, always happy to share a story or point out something you might have missed. It's the kind of place where you can spend a good hour soaking it all in, and it's free—we just ask for a small donation if you can. We're right in the heart of town, so it's easy to find and makes for a perfect stop on a wander through Abertillery.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a former shop unit within a classic Victorian-era terrace, it’s got that unassuming, humble charm that fits right in on Market Street.
