Walls of Sousse Medina

About This Museum

Standing before the Walls of Sousse Medina is like facing a millennia-old sentinel that has watched over the city since the 9th century. I spent an hour just wandering the ramparts, tracing my fingers along the sun-warmed stone and peering through the ancient arrow slits down into the bustling modern streets. The sheer scale of it is breathtaking—this isn't a reconstructed exhibit, but the real, formidable thing. You can almost hear the echoes of Aghlabid soldiers and feel the history seeping from every brick.

Collection Highlights

The main 'exhibit' is the wall itself, with its imposing Bab el Khabli gate and a well-preserved section of the ramparts you can walk. Don't miss the Kasbah tower for a panoramic view that stitches together the old medina and the sparkling Mediterranean coast.

Visitor Information

It's free to walk around the exterior, which is what most people do—just head towards the medina and you can't miss it. For getting up onto the walls themselves, ask locally as access can change, but your best bet is usually through the Archaeological Museum inside the Kasbah.

Architecture & Building

This is classic Aghlabid military architecture: massive sandstone blocks forming a formidable defensive curtain reinforced with solid square towers, all built to last over a thousand years.
