Bardo National Museum
About This Museum
You won't believe it, but this place holds the single largest collection of Roman mosaics on the entire planet. It's all tucked away inside a former royal palace, so you're walking through these incredible, ornate halls that are works of art themselves. One minute you're gazing at a mosaic of a sea god surrounded by mythical creatures, and the next you're looking at hauntingly beautiful Punic funeral masks from ancient Carthage. It’s an overwhelming and absolutely breathtaking collision of history and art.
Collection Highlights
The 'Virgil' mosaic is a must-see—it shows the famous poet holding his masterpiece, the Aeneid. Don't miss the vast 'Triumph of Neptune' with its swirling marine life or the sobering collection of Punic sarcophagi.
Visitor Information
It's in a suburb called Le Bardo, just a short taxi ride from downtown Tunis. Give yourself at least three hours; trust me, you'll need it.
Architecture & Building
A stunning mix of a 19th-century Hafsid palace with grand courtyards, intricate tilework (zellij), and soaring ceilings that have been seamlessly integrated with modern museum wings.
