Tunnel of Salvation

About This Museum

You won't believe it, but this unassuming house in a Sarajevo suburb was once the literal lifeline for an entire city. It's built right over the entrance to the Tunnel of Salvation, the secret underground passage dug by hand during the siege that allowed food, supplies, and people to move in and out when the city was completely cut off. Walking through the small museum feels incredibly personal; you can still go down into a section of the actual tunnel, which is cramped, damp, and humbling. It’s not a grand museum but a raw, intimate look at how people survived against impossible odds.

Collection Highlights

The preserved 20-meter section of the original tunnel is the star, but you'll also find a stretcher used to carry wounded, military uniforms, maps detailing the tunnel's route under the airport runway, and photographs of the civilians who built and used it.

Visitor Information

It's easy to miss from the street—just look for the small sign on a residential house. The entry fee is super affordable, and they only take cash. Definitely watch the short documentary they show; it really brings everything together.

Architecture & Building

From the outside, it looks just like any other family home in the neighborhood—a simple, modest suburban house that perfectly hides its incredible secret.
