Torpedo Bay Navy Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away in the charming seaside suburb of Devonport, with stunning views back towards Auckland's skyline, you'll find New Zealand's official naval museum. It's a surprisingly intimate space, packed with personal stories and incredible artifacts that bring over a century of naval history to life. I was completely drawn in by the detailed models and the chance to even step inside a real bridge simulator. It feels less like a formal institution and more like a passionate conversation about our maritime past.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the massive torpedo that gives the bay its name, or the beautifully intricate ship models. The Medal Room is a profoundly moving space, quietly honoring individual acts of courage.
Visitor Information
It's compact enough to enjoy in an hour or two, and their on-site cafe is perfect for a coffee with a waterfront view afterwards. Best of all, entry is free, though donations are always appreciated to help them continue their work.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a robust, historic 19th-century building that was originally part of Devonport's coastal defense fortifications, it has a wonderfully authentic, bunker-like feel from the outside.
