Auckland Art Gallery
About This Museum
People flock to the Auckland Art Gallery not just for the art, but for the experience of stepping into a grand, château-style building that feels like a piece of history itself. Inside, you can easily lose an afternoon wandering from classic New Zealand landscapes to powerful contemporary installations. The heart of the collection for me, however, was the stunning display of Māori and Pacific art, which provides a profound and essential narrative. It’s one of those rare places where the building and its contents are equally captivating.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the dedicated Māori gallery, 'Toi Tū Toi Ora', with its incredible contemporary works, and keep an eye out for iconic New Zealand pieces like Charles Goldie's portraits.

It's right on Wellesley Street East in the city center, super easy to get to. Best part? Entry is free for all their permanent collections, so you can pop in without any fuss.

The main building is this beautiful French château-style mansion from the 1880s, all in white stone, which has been brilliantly connected to a stunning modern wing with kauri wood canopies.
