The Kauri Museum
About This Museum
You'd never guess that a humble, rustic building in rural Northland holds the story of giants. I was completely captivated by this place, which feels less like a museum and more like a love letter to the mighty kauri tree and the tough-as-nails pioneers who lived amongst them. It’s an absolute treasure trove of history, filled with the scent of ancient timber and tales of human ingenuity. You walk out with a whole new appreciation for this incredible native forest.
Collection Highlights
The sheer scale hits you first—there's an entire two-story kauri slab so massive it's hard to believe it came from a single tree. Don't miss the breathtaking collection of amber-like kauri gum, displayed like jewelry, or the fully restored gum-digger's hut that makes you feel the grit of that life. And keep an eye out for 'The Princess,' a stunningly ornate kauri sideboard that took twelve years to carve.
Visitor Information
It's easy to find just off the main road in Matakohe—look for the classic Kiwi country hall vibe. Honestly, give yourself a good couple of hours here; there's so much to see you'll be sorry if you rush.
Architecture & Building
The building itself is unpretentious and charming, echoing the local rural architecture with its simple, gabled forms and weatherboard walls that feel right at home in the landscape.
