Takapuna Beach
About This Museum
You wouldn't know it from the laid-back beach vibe today, but this very shoreline was once a stage for volcanic fury and Māori pā sites. I love how the museum, right on The Strand, feels more like a local's living room than a formal institution, with stories spilling out onto the sand. It’s a place where you can learn about the submerged Māori fortifications of Maungauku or the shipwrecks just offshore, then step outside to see the modern-day surfers catching waves. The whole experience blurs the line between past and present in the most beautiful way.
Collection Highlights
The exhibits on Maungauku, the 'Mountain of the God of War,' are hauntingly powerful, telling the story of a fortified pā now submerged in the Waitematā Harbour. Another highlight is delving into the area's industrial past, with relics from the old quarry and stories of the ships that didn't quite make it to port.
Visitor Information
It's right there on The Strand at Takapuna Beach—you really can't miss it. Pop in after a swim or before grabbing a coffee from one of the killer cafes nearby; it’s that kind of easy-going spot.
Architecture & Building
Housed in what feels like a classic Kiwi beach bach or community hall, it's unpretentious and welcoming, with weatherboard walls that seem to soak up the sun and salt air.
