The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina
About This Museum
You'd never guess this grand, almost palace-like building started life as a research museum back in 1888. It feels like stepping into a time capsule dedicated entirely to Bosnia and Herzegovina's rich history. Beyond the main exhibits, there's even a peaceful botanical garden tucked away on the grounds—a complete surprise. It’s the kind of place where you can spend hours just wandering and discovering.
Collection Highlights
The absolute must-see is the famous Sarajevo Haggadah, a stunningly preserved medieval Jewish manuscript. You'll also find everything from ancient Roman mosaics and stećci tombstones to traditional folk costumes and natural history displays.
Visitor Information
It's super easy to find on Zmaja od Bosne street, right near the city center. Definitely check their website for current opening times before you go, as they can sometimes vary.
Architecture & Building
Imagine a magnificent, symmetrical building with a grand central entrance and elegant archways, all finished in that beautiful Austro-Hungarian style you see around the city.
