The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center
About This Museum
You won't find a single animal here that wasn't born in the wilds of Belize or rescued from a difficult situation. Wandering the shaded, sandy paths feels less like a traditional zoo and more like a walk through the jungle, where you're casually introduced to the country's most iconic residents. I was inches away from a magnificent jaguar named Junior Buddy, who calmly watched me from his lush enclosure. It’s an intimate, powerful experience that completely redefines what a zoo can be.
Collection Highlights
The stars are undoubtedly Belize's native cats, including jaguars and pumas, but don't miss the cheeky spider monkeys swinging overhead or the harpy eagle, a truly awe-inspiring bird of prey. The tapirs, Belize's endearing 'mountain cows,' are also a must-see.
Visitor Information
It's about a 45-minute drive from Belize City on the Western Highway—just look for the signs around Mile 29. Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the animals are most active; the heat of the day can make everyone a bit sleepy.
Architecture & Building
Forget grand buildings; this place is all about open-air enclosures seamlessly woven into the natural landscape of broadleaf forest. It feels wonderfully un-manicured and authentic.
