Cahal Pech Archaeological Reserve
About This Museum
Perched on a hill overlooking the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, Cahal Pech feels more like a lost city than an archaeological site. Wandering through its compact plaza, you're surrounded by the weathered stone foundations of palaces and temples that once echoed with the lives of Maya elites. It's incredible to stand in the main plaza, where Structure 1—the tallest temple—reaches for the sky, and imagine this place humming with activity over a thousand years ago. The real reward for the climb, aside from all that history, is the breathtaking panoramic view of the Belize River Valley.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the restored royal tomb in Structure 7, where a high-status individual was laid to rest with jade and shell ornaments. The site's signature ball court is remarkably intact, letting you picture the intense ancient games that once took place there.
Visitor Information
Wear good shoes for climbing the stone steps and bring water, as it can get quite warm. It's a manageable site to explore in a couple of hours, making it a perfect morning trip before heading into town for lunch.
