About This Museum
Perched up on the slopes of One Tree Hill, the Stardome has been a beacon for Auckland's star-gazers since the late 60s. It all started when the Auckland Astronomical Society got a proper home, and that distinctive dome became a fixture on the city's skyline. These days, it's where families pile in on a crisp evening to see the rings of Saturn for the first time through the big telescope in the courtyard. You can feel that sense of wonder as soon as you walk through the doors.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss Tūhura, their interactive space gallery where you can launch a virtual rocket or touch a real meteorite. The planetarium itself is the main event, with shows that sweep you across the galaxy from the comfort of your seat. And out in the courtyard, their historic Zeiss telescope still offers breathtaking views of our cosmic neighbours.
Visitor Information
It's best to book your planetarium show online, especially for weekend sessions which fill up fast. If you're coming for an evening viewing, wrap up warm—that courtyard gets chilly even in summer. There's usually plenty of parking out front on Manukau Road.
Architecture & Building
The building is a classic piece of mid-century civic architecture, dominated by that iconic white dome which houses the main theatre. It has a no-nonsense, functional feel about it, very much of its time.
