Space Place at Carter Observatory

About This Museum

Perched up in the Kelburn hills with an incredible view over Wellington, this little observatory is a total gem for anyone curious about the cosmos. The main event for us was the planetarium show—lying back in the dark under a dome filled with swirling galaxies was absolutely breathtaking. We also spent ages at the hands-on exhibits, trying to figure out our weight on different planets and touching a real meteorite. It’s amazing how much they’ve packed into this compact space.

Collection Highlights

The giant Cooke telescope is a beautiful, historic piece of machinery you can actually see in action on clear nights. The planetarium shows are a definite highlight, immersing you in journeys across the solar system. Don't miss the interactive displays where you can launch virtual rockets or feel the strange texture of a space rock.

Visitor Information

Definitely book your planetarium tickets online ahead of time as sessions can fill up, especially on weekends. If it's a clear night, stay late for a chance to peer through the big telescope—it's so worth it.

Architecture & Building

It has this lovely classic observatory look with a white dome, but it's tucked right into the Wellington Botanic Garden, which makes the whole visit feel really special.
