Shimane Art Museum

About This Museum

You'd never guess an art museum could feel this serene, but the Shimane Art Museum is practically floating on the edge of Lake Shinji. Inside, it feels more like walking through a beautifully curated private home than a stuffy institution, with soft light illuminating centuries of Japanese artistry. I was completely captivated by the delicate silk paintings where you can almost see the artist's brushstrokes, and the rich indigo blues of their Edo-period woodblock prints are unforgettable. Then you can step outside to wander the sculpture lawn, where modern forms stand against that incredible lakeside backdrop.

Collection Highlights

Edo-period ukiyo-e woodblock prints, intricate paintings on silk from the 16th century, and a diverse collection of regional ceramics. The outdoor sculpture garden along Lake Shinji is a major highlight itself.

Visitor Information

It's easy to find at 1-5 Sodeshicho in Matsue, and trust me, you'll want to grab a coffee afterwards just to sit and stare at the lake views.

Architecture & Building

A strikingly modern, low-slung building with massive windows designed to seamlessly blend with its lakeside setting, creating a calm and contemplative atmosphere.
