Hokkaido Museum
About This Museum
Out here in Atsubetsu Ward, on what was once the grounds of an old government farm, you'll find the Hokkaido Museum. It's a place that truly gets to the heart of our island's story, weaving together the threads of ancient nature, Ainu heritage, and pioneering history into one grand narrative. Don't let its modern exterior fool you—inside, you're walking through time, from the age of mammoths to the challenges faced by early settlers. They've even got multilingual audio guides, so you can dive deep into the tales without missing a beat.
Collection Highlights
You can't miss the towering skeleton of a Naumann's elephant or the delicate beauty of traditional Ainu attus robes. One of my favorite spots is the full-scale replica of a coal miner's house from the early 20th century; it really makes you feel the grit and determination of that era.
Visitor Information
It's a bit outside central Sapporo, but easily reached by JR bus from Shin-Sapporo Station. Give yourself a good three or four hours to see everything properly—the grounds are expansive and perfect for a stroll after you've explored the galleries inside.
Architecture & Building
The building is strikingly contemporary, with clean lines and vast glass walls that beautifully frame the surrounding woodlands and sky.
