Museum of Waitangi
About This Museum
People come here, to the very place where New Zealand's story was forever changed, searching for the heart of our nation. You can stand in that spot, feel the weight of history, and see Te Kōngahu's magnificent carvings that seem to whisper stories of the past. The museum doesn't just show you objects; it wraps you in the powerful, sometimes difficult, narratives of Te Tiriti o Waitangi from multiple perspectives. It’s a deeply moving experience that stays with you long after you've left this beautiful coastline.
Collection Highlights
The star is Te Whare Rūnanga, the stunningly carved meeting house representing all iwi, and 'Te Rau Aroha', the powerful medal gifted by Māori soldiers. You'll also see the majestic waka taua (war canoe) Ngātokimatawhaorua resting on the shore.
Visitor Information
You'll find it all within the Waitangi Treaty Grounds—your entry ticket gets you access to the whole site, so give yourself a good few hours to take it all in properly.
Architecture & Building
The main museum building, Te Kōngahu, has a beautiful, modern design with sweeping lines that echo the landscape, sitting lightly yet powerfully beside the historic Treaty House.
