Museum of Literature & Performing Arts
About This Museum
Tucked away on a quiet street in Sarajevo's old town, this museum feels less like an institution and more like stepping directly into the living heart of Bosnian culture. I was immediately struck by how it weaves together the written word with the palpable energy of the stage. You don't just see manuscripts under glass; you feel the presence of the poets and playwrights who shaped the national conversation. It’s a quiet, contemplative space that hums with a profound sense of legacy, making the country's literary and theatrical history feel immediate and deeply personal.
Collection Highlights
The crown jewel for me was Meša Selimović's original manuscript for 'The Dervish and Death', its pages filled with his handwritten notes. Equally captivating is a room dedicated to theater, where you can find beautifully preserved set designs, vintage playbills, and even a puppet from the famous Sarajevo Puppet Theatre that seems to watch you as you pass by.
Visitor Information
It's easy to find just off Baščaršija's main drag, and it’s a perfect, peaceful retreat from the bustling market streets. I'd recommend setting aside at least an hour to really soak it all in without feeling rushed.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a beautiful, understated Austro-Hungarian building, its high ceilings and creaking wooden floors add so much to the atmosphere, feeling both grand and wonderfully intimate.
