Museu do Reggae Maranhão
About This Museum
I had no idea that São Luís, way up in northern Brazil, was such a hub for reggae—they even call it the 'Jamaica of Brazil'! This fantastic little museum tells the story of how it all started back in the 70s, when radio waves brought the sound from Jamaica and it took root here like nowhere else. You can feel the rhythm everywhere, from the vintage record covers plastered on the walls to the old-school radio booth you can step into. The whole place just pulses with this local pride for a sound that became entirely their own. It's way more than a museum; it's a celebration of the city's soul.
Collection Highlights
The walls are a mosaic of classic vinyl sleeves, and there's an entire exhibit dedicated to Radio Difusora, the station that first broadcast reggae here. Don't miss the recreated DJ booth and listening stations where you can hear rare tracks.
