Seringal Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away on the banks of the Igarapé São João, this isn't your typical museum; it's a portal straight back to the Amazon's rubber boom era. You don't just see history here, you feel it, walking through the preserved structures of a working rubber plantation, or 'seringal'. The air is thick and humid, filled with the scent of wet earth and old wood, making the past feel incredibly immediate. It’s a profoundly evocative experience that connects you to a pivotal, and often painful, chapter of Amazonian history.
Collection Highlights
The entire site is the exhibit, from the main manor house with its period furnishings to the stark 'barracão' where workers lived and traded. Don't miss the 'tapiri de defumação', the small smoking shed where liquid latex was transformed into solid rubber balls—the very heart of the operation.
Visitor Information
Getting there is an adventure itself, requiring a boat trip along the Tarumã-Mirim creek from Manaus. It's best to check for local guides or tour operators in Manaus who can arrange the journey.
Architecture & Building
The buildings are classic Amazonian vernacular architecture, constructed on stilts from local woods with thatched palm roofs, perfectly adapted to the riverine environment.
