Musée de Rodrigues

About This Museum

You'd never guess this unassuming building holds the entire story of a remote island in its hands. Tucked away in Port Mathurin, the Musée de Rodrigues feels more like stepping into a local's well-kept treasure chest than a formal museum. It’s a place where you can stand face-to-face with the skeleton of a solitaire, the island's long-extinct flightless bird, and then turn a corner to find beautifully crafted fishing traps still used by villagers today. The whole experience connects you to the soul of Rodrigues in a way that feels incredibly personal and genuine.

Collection Highlights

The star is definitely the solitaire bird skeleton, but don't miss the traditional 'bwa de fer' woodwork and displays of old pirogues that show how people have lived with the sea for generations.
