About This Museum

Perched right on the edge of the turquoise sea, this stout, circular tower feels more like a weathered sentinel than a museum. Stepping inside is like walking back in time to the early 1800s, when the British built these forts to defend against French naval invasion. The air is cool and thick with history, smelling faintly of old stone and salt. You can almost hear the echoes of soldiers' footsteps on the spiral staircase as you explore the surprisingly spacious three floors.

Collection Highlights

Don't miss the massive, original cannon on the roof with its breathtaking panoramic view of the coastβ€”it's easy to imagine it being loaded and fired. Downstairs, displays of rusted musket balls, old uniform buttons, and simple utensils paint a vivid picture of a soldier's daily life in this isolated post.

Visitor Information

It's a small museum, so an hour is plenty. Wear good shoes for the narrow spiral stairs! The coastal road location makes it a perfect, quick stop to break up a drive along Mauritius's stunning west coast.

Architecture & Building

It's classic Martello Tower design: a massively thick, windowless stone wall facing the sea and a two-story barracks nestled inside, all topped with a flat roof for the cannon.
