MOTAT Museum of Transport and Technology
About This Museum
This isn't your typical quiet museum; MOTAT is a massive, 40-acre playground for the curious, where you're encouraged to press buttons and get hands-on with history. It's a celebration of Kiwi ingenuity, spread across two sites you can travel between on a vintage tram. You can easily spend a whole day here exploring everything from early computers to classic New Zealand-made cars. The heart of it all is the original 1877 Pump House, a beautiful industrial-era building that once provided Auckland's water.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the impressive collection of Kiwi cars, including the iconic Trev and some classic Fords. The aviation hall is incredible, with full-sized aircraft you can walk right up to. And the working steam engines in the Pumphouse are absolutely mesmerizing to watch.
Visitor Information
Wear comfy shoes because there's a lot of ground to cover! The tram that shuttles between the two sites is part of the fun and included with your entry ticket. It's perfect for families, but honestly, anyone with a bit of curiosity will have a blast.
Architecture & Building
The star is the original 1877 Pumphouse, this grand Victorian-era industrial building made of red brick and cast iron. The other exhibition halls are more modern and functional, designed to house large vehicles and interactive displays.
