Giorgi Chitaia Open Air Museum of Ethnography
About This Museum
What truly sets this museum apart is its sprawling hillside location, offering not just artifacts but a living, breathing villagescape overlooking the Tbilisi skyline. Instead of quiet galleries, you'll wander along winding paths connecting authentic homes and farmsteads from every corner of Georgia. It feels less like a museum and more like time travel, where each building tells a story of regional craftsmanship and daily life. You can peek into a shadowy Svaneti defensive tower one moment and admire the carved wooden balconies of a Kartlian home the next.
Collection Highlights
Beyond the buildings themselves, you'll find vibrant displays of traditional textiles, intricate metalwork, and rustic agricultural tools that fill the structures with a sense of lived-in history. Don't miss the collection of massive Qvevri wine jars, some taller than a person, which are central to Georgia's ancient winemaking heritage.
Visitor Information
Wear comfortable shoes—the terrain is hilly and you'll be doing a lot of walking. It's a fantastic place to spend a sunny afternoon; just bring water as the Georgian sun can be intense. The views from the top are absolutely worth the climb.
Architecture & Building
The museum showcases diverse regional styles, from the stone-and-slate houses of the mountainous regions to the wooden, balcony-rich homes from eastern Georgia, all authentically relocated and preserved.
