Despić House

About This Museum

You have to see this place—it's not just a museum, but the actual home of one of Sarajevo's most prominent families, the Despićs. Walking through its rooms feels like stepping directly into the 19th century, with original furnishings and personal belongings still in place. What’s really unique is that it’s considered one of the first museums dedicated to urban living in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It gives you such an intimate, tangible feel for how a wealthy merchant family lived, loved, and entertained in old Sarajevo.

Collection Highlights

The real highlight is the family's stunning collection of European-style furniture and those beautiful, traditional Persian carpets scattered throughout. Don't miss the charming private Orthodox chapel tucked away inside the house—a real surprise. You'll also find old family portraits and documents that tell their story firsthand.

Visitor Information

It's super easy to find right in the city center on Despićeva street. Just pop in; it doesn't take long to see everything, making it a perfect little stop if you're exploring the Baščaršija old town area.

Architecture & Building

The building itself is a beautiful example of Ottoman-era Balkan architecture, with those classic overhanging wooden bays and whitewashed walls, but you can also see how later European influences were woven in.
