Aotea Utanganui - Museum of South Taranaki
About This Museum
Down here on Egmont Street in Pātea, our museum is a real treasure chest for the stories of South Taranaki. It's not just a building; it feels like sitting down with an old-timer who has all the best yarns, from the ancient Māori waka that gave this place its name to the more recent tales of industry and community. You can almost hear the hum of the freezing works and the strum of a guitar from 'Poi E'. We've gathered up the threads of this coast's rich tapestry, and we love sharing them.
Collection Highlights
The star of the show is undoubtedly the Aotea Waka exhibition, which tells the powerful founding story of local iwi. You'll also find poignant relics from the Pātea Freezing Works and, of course, a proud display dedicated to the iconic Pātea Māori Club and their worldwide hit 'Poi E'.
Visitor Information
We're right there on the main street in Pātea, easy to spot. Just pop in; it's a wonderful stop to stretch your legs and soak in some real local colour on a drive down the coast.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a solid, no-nonsense former bank building that speaks to the town's prosperous past, its sturdy character feels just right for safeguarding our history.
