Altun Ha
About This Museum
Tucked away in the lush, green forests of central Belize, Altun Ha feels more like a discovery than a destination. You emerge from the jungle canopy to find two main grassy plazas surrounded by weathered stone temples. The most iconic structure is the Temple of the Masonry Altars, a massive pyramid that dominates the skyline. Itβs a place where you can almost hear the echoes of ancient ceremonies and feel the history seeping from the limestone.
Collection Highlights
The star of the show is undoubtedly the 'Kinich Ahau' jade head, an intricately carved representation of the Mayan sun god discovered right here in a tomb. Scattered around the central grass expanse, you'll also find numerous stone altars where priests once performed rituals.
Visitor Information
It's located off the Old Northern Highway, about a 30-mile drive from Belize City. Wear good shoes for climbing and bring water, as it can get quite hot exploring the open plazas.
