Al Alam Palace
About This Museum
While its foundations are ancient, the palace you see today was largely built under Sultan Qaboos in the 1970s, transforming it into the vibrant ceremonial residence it is now. It's famously flanked by two immense, perfectly manicured Portuguese-style forts, Jalal and Mirani, which stand as silent sentinels on the surrounding hills. The real showstopper is the facade itself—a brilliant central structure with soaring columns painted in dazzling shades of royal blue and gold. You can't go inside, but the main draw is strolling along the grand plaza out front for that perfect photo with one of Muscat's most iconic views.
Collection Highlights
The key exhibits are arguably architectural: the palace's magnificent facade and its two flanking forts. The interior is not open to the public, so the experience is focused on appreciating the exterior grandeur and the ceremonial significance of the site itself.
Visitor Information
Remember, this is a working royal palace, so you can't tour the inside. But it's absolutely worth a stop to see the exterior and take photos from the large public square in front of it. Just be respectful of the guards and any official proceedings.
