Sultan's Armed Forces Museum
About This Museum
Everyone comes to Muscat for the souks and the sea, but I found a story just as compelling tucked away in Bait Al Falaj Fort. This isn't a stuffy collection of dusty artifacts; it's the vibrant, proud story of Oman itself, told through the lens of its military history. You walk from dark, traditional rooms showcasing ancient khanjars and chainmail into a vast, modern hall with jet fighters suspended from the ceiling. It’s this incredible journey from a fortified past to a present-day force, and it completely captivated me.
Collection Highlights
The sheer scale of the modern hardware is breathtaking—you stand right under the wings of a British-made BAC Strikemaster and a massive Skyvan transport plane. Don't miss the Hall of Oman, where you can trace the nation's history from the Yarubid dynasty's liberation from the Portuguese all the way to the modern Renaissance under His Majesty Sultan Qaboos.
Visitor Information
It's located on Al Mujamma Street in Old Muscat, easy to pair with a visit to the Sultan's Palace nearby. The entry fee is a complete steal—just 1 Omani Rial—and you'll want at least two hours to do it justice.
Architecture & Building
The museum is housed in Bait Al Falaj Fort, an original 19th-century stone fortress with classic Omani crenellations that immediately sets the historical stage before you even step inside.
