Perched on Russky Island, the Voroshilovskaya Batareya is a stark monument to a more anxious age, a coastal defense battery built in the 1930s when the world felt much larger and borders needed concrete guardians. Stepping inside is like entering a time capsule of Cold War tension; the air is cool and heavy with the scent of old oil and damp concrete. You navigate through a labyrinth of narrow corridors and massive gun emplacements, feeling the sheer, intimidating scale of the twin 305mm naval gun turrets that were once the teeth of this fortress. It’s less a traditional museum and more an immersive, slightly haunting journey into the mechanics of past conflicts.
Collection Highlights
The undeniable stars are the two colossal twin-gun turrets, salvaged from a scrapped battleship, whose mechanisms you can see up close. Don't miss the extensive network of underground ammunition magazines and command posts, connected by a small-gauge railway used to ferry massive shells.
