Villa Monastero
About This Museum
Oh, Villa Monastero is an absolute dream of a place, perched right on the edge of Lake Como. It began its life way back in the late 12th century as a Cistercian convent, can you imagine? Over the centuries it was transformed from a sacred space into a lavish private residence, and you can feel all those layers of history as you wander through. The real magic is how the opulent interiors flow seamlessly into those breathtaking, terraced gardens that seem to tumble right down into the blue water.
Collection Highlights
You simply must see the grand Sala da Pranzo (Dining Room) with its incredible gilded leather walls and ornate wooden ceiling—it feels like stepping into a Belle Époque party. Then there's the garden, a true highlight itself, dotted with classical statues and rare, fragrant plants from all over the world.

It's wonderfully easy to get to; just take a ferry to the charming village of Varenna and it's a short, lovely stroll along the waterfront promenade. Do check their website for seasonal opening times, as they can change.
