Villa Carlotta
About This Museum
You wouldn't believe it, but this incredible villa and its gardens were a wedding present. It sits right on the edge of Lake Como, with 14 acres of jaw-dropping terraced gardens that climb up the hillside. Inside, it feels less like a stiff museum and more like wandering through a ridiculously wealthy family's grand home, filled with art they actually lived with. The whole place has this amazing, layered history from different owners.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the massive marble frieze showing Alexander the Great entering Babylonβit was actually commissioned by Napoleon himself. And the sculpture galleries are incredible, especially Antonio Canova's 'Palamedes' and the heartbreaking 'Last Kiss of Romeo and Juliet'.
Visitor Information
It's on Via Statale in Tremezzina, easy to get to by ferry. Honestly, give yourself a few hours because you'll want to get lost in both the house and the sprawling gardens.
Architecture & Building
A classic 17th-century Italian villa with a grand, symmetrical facade that looks perfectly at home on the lakefront.
