The Railway Museum
About This Museum
You know how everyone comes to the Netherlands for the canals, but we stumbled upon this gem that's all about the iron horses that truly connected the country. It's set right inside a beautifully restored 19th-century station, so you're walking through the grand old waiting rooms where passengers stood over a century ago. The best part is how hands-on it is—you can climb into historic locomotives, try your hand at a railway signal box, and even experience what a steam train ride feels like. It completely changed my view on Dutch history, making it about more than just windmills and tulips; it’s a story of engineering and connection.
Collection Highlights
Getting to walk through the lavish royal train carriage from 1894 was incredible, and the massive 'De Arend' steam locomotive replica is a showstopper. Don't miss the interactive exhibits where you can play at being a signal operator or dispatcher—it's way more fun than you'd think!
Visitor Information
It's super easy to get to, fittingly enough—just a short walk from Utrecht Central Station. Definitely book your tickets online to be safe, especially if you want a spot on one of the short steam train rides they sometimes run.
Architecture & Building
The museum is the original Maliebaanstation itself, a gorgeous, classic 19th-century terminus with all its historic charm intact, from the high arched windows to the old-fashioned ticket hall.
