The Museum "Zair Azgur Memorial Studio"
About This Museum
It’s a little-known fact that the man who sculpted Lenin and Stalin more than anyone else lived and worked in this unassuming Minsk house. Today, the studio feels frozen in time, a dusty, high-ceilinged space crowded with giants. Plaster heads of Soviet heroes stare blankly from every corner, their sheer number creating an almost overwhelming presence. It's less a sterile gallery and more a direct portal into the artistic engine room of the USSR.
Collection Highlights
The collection is dominated by Azgur's official state commissions—row upon row of monumental busts of communist leaders. Look for the colossal, multi-ton head of Felix Dzerzhinsky, founder of the Soviet secret police, which looms over the main hall. Alongside these are more personal works, including a touching portrait of his wife.
Visitor Information
Tucked away at Azhura Street 8, it's one of Minsk's more niche museums, so you might have the place to yourself. It's best to check their social media or call ahead for opening hours as they host various cultural events and can sometimes be closed for private functions.
Architecture & Building
The building is a modest two-story brick house with a simple, functionalist facade that gives little hint of the cavernous studio hidden within.
