The Highland People Discovery Museum
About This Museum
Did you know some of the tribes in Northern Thailand have a tradition of crafting textiles from tree bark? I was completely captivated by that fact during my last visit to the Highland People Discovery Museum. Nestled within the beautiful Rama IX Lanna Park, this place is so much more than a simple building; it's a living gateway into the diverse cultures of the region's mountain communities. You can wander from indoor galleries filled with intricate silverwork and vibrant hand-woven garments out to recreated traditional village homes. It truly immerses you in a world of ancient wisdom and stunning artistry.
Collection Highlights
Look for the stunning 'pha lai thai khwa' textiles with their unique diamond patterns, the heavy silver tribal jewelry, and a full-scale replica of a Lahu roof-raising ceremony. The outdoor area with its authentic bamboo stilt houses is unforgettable.
Visitor Information
It's easy to spend half a day here, especially if you explore both the indoor and outdoor exhibits. Since it's located within Rama IX Lanna Park, you can combine your visit with a lovely stroll through the gardens.
Architecture & Building
The main building has a beautiful, modern Lanna-inspired design with sweeping, multi-tiered roofs that echo traditional Northern Thai temples, all set against a lush, green landscape.
