You'd never guess this place was once a bustling coal mine, but that's the magic of Grand Hornu. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site where the ghosts of the Industrial Revolution rub shoulders with some of the most cutting-edge contemporary art and design you'll ever see. Walking through the massive, symmetrical complex of black brick buildings is an experience in itself—it feels both ancient and utterly modern at the same time. They have these incredible temporary exhibitions that completely transform the old workshops and miners' quarters.

The exhibits are always changing, but you might find anything from mind-bending digital installations tucked into a vaulted archway to a showcase of radical furniture design placed right on the original factory floors.
