The Citadelle of Québec
About This Museum
Perched dramatically atop Cap Diamant, the Citadelle of Québec isn't so much a museum as it is a living, breathing piece of history. Its star-shaped ramparts, which began taking shape after the War of 1812, have silently witnessed centuries of military strategy and political change. Walking the grounds, you feel the weight of its ongoing duty as the home of the Royal 22e Régiment. The air is thick with a unique atmosphere—part tourist spectacle, part active military garrison—where the crisp shouts of drill commands echo off ancient stone.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the small, poignant museum inside the fortress that tells the story of Canada's famed Royal 22e Régiment through personal artifacts and uniforms. The real showstopper, however, is the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony, a vibrant display of precision and pageantry complete with the regiment's iconic bearskin hats.
Visitor Information
Wear comfortable shoes because this is a sprawling site with some steep climbs. Be sure to check the timing for the Changing of the Guard online before you go—it's a highlight you won't want to miss.
Architecture & Building
It's a classic Vauban-style fortification, all imposing grey stone arranged in a distinctive star shape designed to eliminate blind spots for defenders. It feels utterly formidable and seamlessly integrated into the cliffside.
