Temple of Bacchus

About This Museum

It's almost unbelievable, but the Temple of Bacchus is actually larger than the Parthenon in Athens. Tucked within the monumental ruins of Baalbek, this Roman masterpiece has stood for nearly two millennia. Walking between its towering columns makes you feel incredibly small, a guest in a house built for a god. The sheer scale and preservation here are simply unmatched.

Collection Highlights

The entire structure is the exhibit, but your eyes are immediately drawn to the incredibly detailed ceiling of the inner sanctum, carved with roaring masks of Bacchus himself. Don't miss the massive, intricately carved stone doorways that still swing on their original pivots.

Visitor Information

It's part of the Baalbek archaeological site, so wear comfortable shoes for exploring the vast complex. The light is particularly magical in the late afternoon, casting long shadows through the forest of columns.

Architecture & Building

A stunningly well-preserved Roman temple defined by its colossal Corinthian columns, which support a richly decorated entablature and a soaring stone-vaulted ceiling inside.
