Baalbek Temple
About This Museum
You think you know ancient ruins until you feel the sheer, impossible scale of the stones at Baalbek. I stood in the shadow of columns so massive they make you question everything about Roman engineering. Wandering through the Temple of Jupiter's courtyard, the air itself feels heavy with centuries of history and forgotten gods. It’s not just a site you see; it’s a place that physically overwhelms you.
Collection Highlights
The truly mind-bending exhibits are the Trilithon—three stones each weighing over 800 tons, perfectly fitted into a wall. Then there's the remarkably preserved Temple of Bacchus, its ornate doorway still intact, covered in carvings of grapes and vines that honor the god of wine.
Visitor Information
It's about a two-hour drive from Beirut, and trust me, go with a guide—the stories behind these stones are half the magic. Wear good shoes because you'll be doing a lot of walking over uneven ground.
Architecture & Building
Primarily Roman, built on a grand, almost megalomaniacal scale with colossal columns and intricately carved Corinthian capitals, all sitting atop mysterious pre-Roman foundations.
