Stavropol'skiy Gosudarstvennyy Muzey-Zapovednik Im G. N. Prozriteleva I G.k.prave
About This Museum
If you want to understand Stavropol, you have to start here, in the old merchant building on Dzerzhinskogo Street that holds our collective memory. It's a place deeply shaped by its founders, the visionary teacher Grigory Prozritelev and the practical public servant Georgy Prave, whose passions for history and nature fused to create something truly special. You won't find dusty, silent halls here; instead, you'll walk through the entire story of our region, from the bones of ancient mammoths that roamed the northern Caucasus to the everyday belongings of the Cossacks who built this city. It’s less a museum and more a conversation with the past, all contained under one grand roof.
Collection Highlights
The Sarmatian gold always draws a crowd, but don't miss the surprisingly complete skeleton of a southern elephant. Upstairs, you can lose yourself in the recreated interiors of a Nogai yurt and a traditional Cossack hut, their details telling quieter, more personal stories.
Visitor Information
It's easy to spend half a day here, so take your time. The staff are wonderfully knowledgeable—don't be shy about asking questions. You'll find it at 135 Dzerzhinskogo Street, a cornerstone of the city center.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a stately, historic building from the 19th century that once belonged to a local merchant, its imposing facade and grand interior spaces speak to Stavropol's commercial prosperity in a bygone era.
