State Defense Museum
About This Museum
Believe it or not, this museum's collection started not with historical artifacts, but with gifts presented to the Uzbek Ministry of Defense. Housed in a striking, purpose-built structure, it chronicles the nation's military history from ancient times straight through to its modern, independent army. You'll find everything from Timurid-era chainmail and weaponry to decommissioned tanks and fighter jets parked outside. It’s a surprisingly comprehensive journey that feels both grand and personal.
Collection Highlights
Walk among hulking Soviet T-34 and T-54 tanks on the grounds, then head inside to see intricate medieval armor and a poignant display on Uzbekistan's role in World War II. Don't miss the collection of actual military aircraft, including MiG fighters, sitting just outside the main building.
Visitor Information
It's located at 98 Mirzo Ulugbek Avenue—easy to spot thanks to the war machines out front. While information inside can be sparse if you don't read Uzbek or Russian, the sheer scale of the hardware on display speaks for itself.
Architecture & Building
The building itself is an imposing example of late Soviet monumental architecture, characterized by its massive scale and stark, symmetrical facade designed to convey strength and permanence.
