Smolensk flax
About This Museum
You know how we always think of flax as just, well, linen? I had no idea it was the center of an entire universe here in Smolensk. This fantastic little museum is tucked right into the ancient Nikolskaya Tower of the city's fortress wall. It walks you through the whole magical process, from that tiny blue flower to the sturdy cloth that clothed generations. The most incredible part was seeing how this humble plant shaped the region's identity and even funded its own cathedral back in the day.

They have these beautiful antique spinning wheels and looms you can actually imagine someone using, plus a stunning collection of traditional costumes embroidered with symbols meant to protect the wearer. Don't miss the display of delicate flax stalks with their little blue blossoms—it’s where the beauty begins.
