Skanzen SNM - Múzea ukrajinskej kultúry - Svidník
About This Museum
Tucked away in the hills of northeastern Slovakia, this open-air museum tells the quiet story of the Ukrainian and Ruthenian communities who shaped this land. You don't just see history here; you walk right into it, past weathered wooden churches and farmsteads that seem to breathe with the memories of their former inhabitants. The air smells of old timber and damp earth, a scent that transports you back a century. It’s a deeply peaceful place, where the past feels very close.
Collection Highlights
The heart of the skanzen is its collection of 19th-century wooden churches, their shingled steeples piercing the sky. Inside one, you'll find a stunning iconostasis, its vibrant saints' faces glowing in the dim light. Scattered around are authentic cottages complete with traditional pottery and the heavy, hand-woven linen garments people wore every day.
Visitor Information
Wear good shoes for wandering the grassy paths between buildings. It's a lovely spot for a slow stroll, but do check their seasonal opening times as they can vary.
Architecture & Building
The museum is a village of authentic timber structures—log houses with thatched or wooden-shingled roofs, all painstakingly relocated from surrounding villages to create this living landscape.
