NKP Solivar - Sklad soli
About This Museum
Stepping into the Sklad soli, or Salt Store, in Prešov is like walking straight into the 18th century. This isn't your typical quiet museum; it's a massive, raw industrial hall where the air itself feels heavy with history and you can still see the crystalline salt crusted on the ancient wooden beams. I ran my hand over the rough-hewn timber of the giant winding mechanism, trying to imagine the sheer manpower it took to haul brine from the depths. The sheer scale of this place, built for storing 'white gold', is absolutely humbling and tells a story of wealth that built an entire region.
Collection Highlights
The star of the show is undoubtedly the colossal wooden treadmill, a feat of engineering once powered by horses or humans to lift brine from the mine shafts. You'll also find a fascinating collection of original mining tools and barrels, but honestly, just gazing up at the cathedral-like vaulted ceiling and its salt-encrusted rafters is an exhibit in itself.
Visitor Information
It's located right in Solivar, a district of Prešov that's easy to find. Wear comfortable shoes because you'll be doing a fair bit of standing and staring in awe. The atmosphere is cool and slightly damp, so maybe bring a light layer.
Architecture & Building
The building is a stunning example of raw industrial Baroque—think less about ornate decoration and more about monumental, purely functional beauty. It's this massive, fortress-like stone and timber structure designed for one thing only: to store immense quantities of salt.
